PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Project Limits

·  I-95 from south of Southern Blvd (SR 80) to north of Southern Blvd (SR 80)
·  SR 80 from Gem Lake Drive to Parker Avenue

Purpose

Improve capacity, roadway safety and efficiency.

Scope of Work

The improvements on this project consist of major interchange improvements at the intersection of SR 80 (Southern Boulevard) and I-95. The work includes new construction of the bridges over I-95 and the RR, resurfacing, structural work, signing, signalization, landscaping and lighting.

Construction Timeline

Begin Construction:March 2004
End Construction: October 2006

Maintenance of Traffic

Lane closures on I-95 will only occur at night when traffic volumes are lighter. Three thru lanes will be maintained at all times from 5:30 am to 8:00 pm. There will also be ramp closures as follows:

Southbound I-95 to SR 80 off-ramp and SR 80 to Northbound I-95 on-ramp concurrently– 30 days
Northbound I-95 SR 80 off-ramp and SR 80 to Southbound I-95 on-ramp concurrently– 30 days

Advance warning of ramp work will be provided.

Lane closures on SR 80 will only occur at night when traffic volumes are lighter. Two thru lanes will be maintained at all times from 5:30 am to 7:30 pm west of I-95 and from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm east of I-95. In addition, no lanes should be closed from Friday 5:00 am thru Sunday 10:30 pm.

On SR 80 pedestrian, bicycle, and wheelchair access will be maintained on at least one side of the project at all times.

Construction Phasing

Phase I

SR 80. Traffic will be shifted to the outside. Remove all traffic separators and place temporary asphalt in the median.

I-95. Traffic will be reduced to three lanes in each direction and maintained on the existing roadway while work is being done on the shoulders and in the median. Three of the four ramps will be reduced to one lane as construction begins.

Phase II

SR 80. Shift westbound traffic to the newly constructed median pavement. Construct new westbound lanes. Demolish and reconstruct westbound bridges over Stub Canal and I-95.

I-95. Traffic will be switched between the northbound and southbound lanes as needed for bridge work being done above. Three lanes of traffic will be open in each direction. Ramp work will continue on all four ramps. Temporary concurrent ramp closures on the southbound I-95 to SR 80 off-ramp and SR 80 to northbound I-95 on-ramp will be made as the connections to SR-80 are being constructed.

Phase III

SR 80. Shift traffic to the newly constructed westbound pavement. Construct new eastbound lanes. Demolish and reconstruct eastbound bridges over Stub Canal and I-95.

I-95. Traffic will be switched between the northbound and southbound lanes as needed for bridge work being done above. Three lanes of traffic will be open in each direction. Ramp work will continue on all four ramps. Temporary concurrent ramp closures on the northbound I-95 SR 80 off-ramp and SR 80 to southbound I-95 on-ramp will be made as the connections to SR-80 are being constructed.

Phase IV

SR 80. Traffic will be shifted to the outside of the newly constructed lanes while the median is constructed.

I-95. Traffic will be restored to four lanes in each direction as the road is being milled and resurfaced.

Phase V

SR 80. The final lifts of asphalt will be placed during this stage.

I-95. Traffic will be shifted to the outside as the median is reconstructed.

Phase VI

I-95.  Traffic will be maintained in its final configuration as shoulder work is completed.  Ramps will be completed in this phase.

Phase VII

I-95.  The final lifts of asphalt will be placed during this stage.

Factoids

Over 30.5 miles of temporary barrier wall will be used during construction.
Over 216 miles of temporary striping will be placed during the construction!
