Project
Limits |
|
I-95 from north of Blue Heron Boulevard to south of PGA Boulevard |
 |
Purpose |
|
Improve capacity, roadway safety
and efficiency. |
 |
Scope of Work |
|
FDOT is widening I-95 from six
lanes to ten lanes along this section, a length of approximately 2.6 miles.
The work includes replacing the existing bridges over Northlake Boulevard,
Holly Drive and Burns Road. Auxiliary lanes will also be added along portions
of the mainline between interchanges. The construction will include modifications
to the mainline and mainline ramps as well as modifications to the side
streets and side street ramp terminals at Northlake Boulevard and PGA
Boulevard. The project will also include drainage improvements, sound
barrier walls, retaining walls, signing and pavement marking, signalization,
lighting, landscaping, and irrigation and communications elements.

 |
Construction Timeline |
|
Begin Construction: August 2002
End Construction: September 2006 |
 |
Maintenance of Traffic |
|
Lane Closure on I-95 will only
occur at night when traffic volumes are lighter. Three thru lanes will
be maintained at all other times.
One ramp at a time at the Northlake interchange will be closed for 30
days each as the ramps are reconstructed. Advance warning of the ramp
work will be provided.
A minimum of two thru-lanes and one left-turn lane shall remain open
on Northlake Boulevard in each direction between the hours of 6:00 AM
and 9:00 PM. Full closures of the eastbound lanes and westbound lanes
(never both at the same time) will be allowed between the hours of 9:00
PM and 6:00 AM for demolition of the existing bridges and beam placements/deck
pours for the new bridge. During those closures, traffic for the closed
direction will be shifted to cross I-95 under the span for the opposing
direction. Pedestrian and bicycle travel ways will be provided for.
Full closure of Holly Drive will be allowed in the immediate proximity
of the bridge (Plant Drive to Dasheen Avenue) between the hours of 9:00
PM and 6:00 AM for beam placements/deck pours for the new bridge. Detour
plans shall be implemented to accommodate both directions of traffic during
the times of full closure. Pedestrian and bicycle traffic will be provided
for.

Construction Phasing |
|
Phase I |
|
Noise walls along both sides of I-95 will
be constructed in this phase. Traffic will be shifted towards the outside
of the existing roadway to accommodate the temporary road and bridge construction
in the existing median. |
|
Phase II |
|
Southbound traffic will be diverted to the
newly constructed median area as the road and bridge improvements on the
southbound side of I-95 are constructed. |
|
Phase III |
|
Northbound traffic will be diverted
to the previously constructed median and the southbound traffic will be
on the newly constructed southbound roadway area as the road and bridge
improvements on the northbound side of I-95 are constructed. |
|
Phase IV |
|
Complete the construction of the road and
bridge improvements in the median as northbound and southbound traffic
use the newly constructed roadways. |
|
Phase V |
|
Traffic will be shifted into its final configuration
as the roadway is resurfaced.
|
 |
Factoids |
|
Over 2 million pounds of steel and 34 million
pounds of concrete will be used to construct the noise walls!
Over 85,000 linear feet of new striping will be placed along the project.
That is over 280 football fields! |
